The Board of Directors of FISH is deeply grateful to the many hours and years of service our volunteers have contributed to FISH. Volunteers perform many different jobs: client intake, food distribution to clients, shelf restocking, driving our trucks to pick-up food donations, and various administrative tasks. We are thrilled that Jan joined us as our Volunteer Coordinator. To find out more, see the FAQs below. Otherwise, if you want to join our corps of volunteers, contact Jan through her email address above, or leave her a message at (303) 460-6806. She is a volunteer too, and she is in the office one day a week, so your patience with her reply is appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions about Volunteering at FISH
What volunteer opportunities are available?
There are short term projects such as Thanksgiving and Holiday food baskets and inventory where people of all ages are needed for a day. I have an email list that will be sent out for those activities. Weekly volunteer positions include working in the food room or doing client intakes, which are interviews conducted before a food order is taken. We ask for at least a six month commitment of one morning or afternoon a week for these positions.
How do I apply?
You can pick up an application at either 12 or 26 Garden Center. There will be an application online by the end of January that you can fill out and send in. A background check is done on all applicants and then an interview is held with the volunteer coordinator. As positions open, you will be called to see if you can do the day and time that’s needed.
How do I sign up for court-ordered community service hours?
You come into 12 Garden Center and fill out an application, and then talk with Mike Lutz the food room manager to get on the schedule for community service hours. We have a lot of people come to FISH for these hours, so don’t wait until your deadline is near because it will take several weeks to a month to get your hours in especially if you have a lot to do. A background check also has to be done before you can start if you are 18 or older. If you are under the age of 15, a parent will need to accompany you during your service hours.
How do I sign up for school, scout or church community service hours?
Come into 12 Garden Center, fill out an application and talk to Mike Lutz about getting on the community service schedule. Because of the number of applicants and hours of operation, it may take awhile to complete these hours so come in and apply as soon as you can. If you are under the age of 15, a parent will need to accompany you during your service hours.
What are the hours of operation at FISH?
FISH is open 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. We are also open for Men’s Night on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:30 and two Saturday mornings a month from 9:00 to 11:00. (no community service hours will be done Wed. night or Saturday mornings)
How do I sign my youth, school or scout group up to visit FISH and help out?
You can call the volunteer coordinator to set up the visit. Because of our small space, groups can be no larger than 7 counting adults. These visits normally are scheduled between 4 and 5 PM after the last food order for clients is filled.
Can families help out at FISH?
Currently families can call the volunteer coordinator to schedule a tour and an hour of service in the sorting room or filling bags of sugar, flour or coffee for the clients. Children under age 7 are not able to volunteer at FISH, and youth between age 7 and 14 must be accompanied by a parent while at FISH.
When will the volunteer coordinator call or email me back?
The volunteer coordinator is also a volunteer so she’s not at FISH everyday. Monday mornings she can be reached at FISH. At that time she’ll answer all phone calls and emails, as well as, respond to new applications and schedule appointments. Appointments can also be scheduled other days of the week depending on availability.
Why can’t I just drop in and help out?
With our regular weekly volunteers and people doing both court-ordered and school/scout community service, right now we just don’t have the space or the jobs for drop-ins volunteers.
